Marie Chiba – Sake Pairing

Marie Chiba, a renowned sake sommelier and Sake Samurai from Tokyo, brings her expertise in sake pairing to the festival. Originally from Iwate Prefecture, Marie transitioned from a systems engineer to a passionate advocate for sake. Her deep knowledge, gained through extensive training and experience, allows her to offer personalised sake pairings that enhance individual preferences. She has popularised innovative concepts like in-mouth seasoning and collaborates with culinary experts to create unique sake experiences.

Simone Maynard, the Sake Mistress from Melbourne, is an independent sake educator and consultant with over 20 years of experience in the food and beverage industry. Through her ‘Taste with the Toji’ project and podcast, Simone shares sake stories and insights, aiming to spread appreciation for this unique beverage.

Wadaiko Rindo Sydney is a vibrant Japanese taiko drumming ensemble known for their dynamic performances. Established in 2010 with support from Toshi Sakamoto, their energetic drumming has captivated audiences across Sydney and beyond. Their performances are a celebration of the deep, resonant sounds of taiko drums, inspiring audiences with their powerful rhythms.

Hananingen

Yuka Konno, the artist behind Hananingen, brings the unique Japanese floral arrangement technique to Sydney. Hananingen, meaning “flower human,” involves arranging fresh flowers on people’s heads and bodies, creating a stunning fusion of floral art and human beauty. Yuka’s award-winning work aims to evoke a sense of self-love and appreciation for the natural world, spreading happiness through her exquisite floral designs.

Wabori Kimono

Wabori Kimono is a stunning blend of Australian indigenous art and traditional Japanese kimono. Produced by Tae Gessner, founder of the International Kimono Club Sydney, this artistic showcase features kimono adorned with beautiful Australian artwork. The show includes performances by koto musician Satsuki Odamura, Aboriginal performer Matthew Doyle, and dancer Asuka Endo, among others, creating a mesmerising fusion of cultures.

TSU KI NE

TSU KI NE is a group of Japanese performers. The group not only expresses Japan with Japanese instruments alone, but also creates a new world by combining them with healing instruments such as the Tibetan Singing Bowl, Japanese Orin, Hand Pan and Gong.

The Consouls

The Consouls, a Sydney-based ensemble, combine jazz and video game music to create a unique sound. Their jazz arrangements of video game tunes have gained them a significant following, both online and at live events. The Consouls have toured Japan and contributed to the soundtrack for Nintendo’s ‘Advance Wars 1+2 Re-boot Camp’. Their lively performances are sure to delight both musicians and gamers alike.

City Waves

City Waves, a Melbourne-based duo, perform covers of J-pop and City Pop inspired by 80s Soul and R&B. Featuring Japanese singer-songwriter Sion and Australian pianist Andy, their piano and vocal arrangements bring a fresh take on classic Japanese hits. They have performed at various festivals and events, capturing audiences with their unique style and improvisation.

Ren Yano – Shodo Exhibition

Ren Yano, a Sydney-based artist specialising in Japanese calligraphy (Shodo), will showcase his remarkable talent at the festival. Ren’s work has been recognised both in Japan and Australia, with his piece ‘Furusato’ housed at the Japanese Embassy in Canberra. His calligraphy combines traditional techniques with modern expressions, creating a visual celebration of Japanese culture.

Twisting Tornadoes

Twisting Tornadoes are a dance team featuring elementary and high school students who all have Japanese lineage or some family connection to Japan. Their performances feature Japanese-inspired arrangements, kimono-like costumes, and traditional Japanese music, bringing youthful energy and cultural heritage to the festival.

Break Juku

Break Juku offers breakdance and Hip Hop classes for kids, taught by experienced dancers. Their performances at the festival will showcase the skills and creativity of young dancers, combining Japanese and international dance styles. These classes, conducted in both Japanese and English, foster valuable experiences and friendships among participants.

The Walk Australia

The Walk Australia 2024 is a contest that transforms the simple act of walking into a powerful expression of change. Originating in Japan, this competition promotes borderless beauty and inclusivity, free from societal constraints.
